Subtraction vs Addition
On doing more...
Doing more of what matters is often a case of doing less of what doesn't.
Since May much of my life has been built around one simple metric of success.
Did I write 4 hours today (that's 20 hours in a week) ?
If yes > Good
If no > Why?
Often, when I don't reach this (my current streak is about 4/13 of reaching my goal)
I just ask why.
The reason is often the additional things I thought I could do, which for me is really only 3 things
- Social media
- Mobiles phone use
Something much more artuflly explained in the legendary Maker/Manager schedule by Paul Graham.
I reserve the mornings to write.
The afternoons, I am spent and can engage in more "manager type thing"
- Meetings
- Client calls
- Sales and marketing
- Business administration
I often get this wrong, and the main reasons are:
- A lack of sleep
- Poor decisions on relationships (bad relationships often create chaos and uncertainty, which stops me being able to concentrate)
But this all comes back to the same idea.
To do more.
Do less of what doesn't matter.
